Master Complex Products in 5 Simple Steps
Learn how to understand complex products and develop training for them.
I often get asked how I learn complex products and then create training around them.
As someone who's navigated the intricacies of healthcare technology for over two decades, from pacemakers to surgical robots, I'm excited to share my approach with you.
The Product Puzzle Approach
Imagine you're faced with a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle. You wouldn't randomly start fitting pieces together.
The same principle applies to mastering complex products:
Start with the big picture: Begin by understanding the product's overall purpose and main features.
Sort and group: Categorize the different components and features, like grouping puzzle pieces by color or pattern.
Work your way in: Gradually explore each component or feature, connecting the dots as you go.
Seek expert insights: If you run into snags or questions, reach out to the product team to understand their thought process behind the feature or workflow.
Note the tricky spots: As you learn, identify areas where customers (who will follow a similar process to you) might struggle. These will become the focus of your training materials.
From Understanding to Teaching
By the time you've completed your "product puzzle," you will have mastered its complexities and mapped out the learning journey.
Also, you will have identified the features that may require more training than others.
Remember, every complex product is just a puzzle waiting to be solved. Take it step by step, and watch the big picture come to life!
